Teachers remain unpaid despite promises

However, Botswana Integrated Sport Association (BISA) members were yet to receive the allowances as of yesterday, while Botswana Primary Schools Sports Association (BOPSSA) affiliates had received theirs. BISA president, Joshua Gaotlhobogwe told Mmegi Sport that the allowances have not been paid.

“Teachers are angry and we do not blame them. We expected the money to have been paid into our account by now but nothing has happened. To make matters worse, there is no communication from the ministry explaining the delay. This is the second year running that we faced with the same challenge,” he said.

He said they have submitted all the information that was required by the ministry and no queries were raised.

Gaotlhobogwe said he was worried that the situation might affect the next athletics competitions. He said it would not be easy to convince teachers to be part of the competition.

He added that the government still owes teachers allowances for ball sports of which they do not know when they would be paid.

Public relations officer for the Ministry of Basic Education, Joseph Wasubera said information on the payment of BISA members would be made available today.

Meanwhile, it is good news for BOPSSA. The association’s president, Busani Segweni said P5.7 million was deposited into their bank account on Tuesday.

“We are busy with the payments through the guidance and advice of the bank. But we are faced with some challenges as teachers are failing to give us their bank accounts. We have been requesting them to do that since May. Those who submitted in May, some accounts have been closed,” he said.
