BICA is a professional body of accountants incorporated in terms of the Accountants Act 2010 to represent members’ interests and ensure observance of the highest professional and ethical standards by its members.

Binedell said the country’s economic growth remains fragile, pressured by the poor performance of the mining sector. He said the institute is an important arm as it plays an advisory role to government on economic development.  He said the role of the institution overlaps to assisting corporate and state entities to be productive and sustainable.

“We need to mature and help our government make the right decisions in the implementation of projects such as the ESP, assist BSE on its mandate and to attract FDI.

Board members in most of these state entities lack the expertise that we have. We should provide and apply our skills to benefit our economy and government,” said Binedell.

He stated that BICA could be the backbone of the economy if the membership is committed and disciplined.

He said Botswana has shortage of accounting professionals with the membership currently seating at 1,160, most of who are young and inexperienced.

He said Botswana needs about 4,000 chartered accountants to provide relevant professionalism needed by the economy.  He warned those who are practising, but not registered to do so with BICA.
