No alcohol at Top 8 matches

Alcohol was sold for the first time, in more than a decade, during the Zebras clash against Zambia in July, with the Botswana Premier League indicating its eagerness to jump on the bandwagon.

Township Rollers have been leading in the trend as in their every league game alcoholic beverages are sold, as so is the case with Orapa United and Jwaneng Galaxy.

Fans, however, will not have the same treat during the country’s most lucrative cup competition, the Mascom Top 8.

 Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, the competition’s Local Organising Committee (LOC) chairperson, Moreo Modisenyane said they have not been given permission by the Botswana Football Association (BFA) to authorise the sale of alcohol.

“We as the LOC, up until we get the green light from the owners of football, we cannot allow anything that has not been legally changed. So we will not allow the sale of alcohol until the mother body approves,” he said.

Modisenyane admitted that they have not been impressed with numbers during the cup games, but said the sale of tickets was going well.

“It has been a concern at the games that we attract very low numbers in the quarterfinals.

I can assure you that the games will be attended in large numbers this time around because since Monday when the sale of tickets began, they have been going very fast,” he said.
