The accident happened around 4pm in what looked like a head-on collision following one of the vehicles experiencing a tyre burst. The accident involved a Toyota Land Cruiser, which was heading north and a Land Rover Discovery, going the opposite direction.

The district traffic officer of District No 12 (Mochudi), Peter Tsheboeng confirmed the accident, stating, “Five people lost their lives in the accident. We will withhold their names for now as their families are still being consulted”.

Tsheboeng further confirmed that two others are still fighting for their lives in hospital.

“Two others are still in hospital, whilst another was treated and discharged on the same day. We are still investigating what could have lead to the accident,” he said.

When The Monitor arrived at the scene, the police had already cleared it, but found onlookers hanging around still in shock. Traffic from the Wesbank Airshow in Rasesa, had come to a standstill with most stopping to enquire.

The two vehicles involved in the accident were beyond recognition with blood still dripping from the cars.

While many had their phones and cameras out to capture the horrific scene, the Police continue to voice their concerns about this, especially when many are posted on social media.

“We are truly grateful for the help we get from the public. They are usually the first to arrive and assist at the scenes.

“But there is a developing trend of people taking pictures and posting them on social media. What the public should know is that most times we will be concentrating on saving the lives of those involved and usually the families will not have been notified yet. Imagine the trauma of having to receive such news on social media, seeing pictures of your relatives cars in that state,” Tsheboeng said.
