The deal will see LKC renamed Canon Jaguars and receive playing kit. Speaking at the sponsorship launch on Friday, Jaguars manager, Freddy Mutenheri said they have achieved a lot in a short period since being promoted to the Botswana Rugby League A Division last season.

He said they are one of the competitive sides in the league due to the way they conduct their business.

“We have strategies in place and they are working for us thus far. We are running our club in a professional way. That has made it easy for corporate companies, especially Canon to assist us,” he said.

Mutenheri said the club is not only for the school, but also for the entire country. He said they intend to produce some of the best players in the league and that would benefit the national team. He said since their stay in the league, they have staged brilliant performances, giving teams that have been in the league for a long time, a run for their money.

Canon Botswana marketing director, Simon Stewart said they were proud to be the first Jaguars sponsors for the 2016 season.  He said the intention is to have the sponsorship continue beyond the current season.

“Having operated in Botswana for more than 38 years, it is one of Canon’s objectives to give back to the community.  This time through supporting youth in sport,” said Stewart.

He said the company would support events to promote the growth of rugby within Jaguars rugby club. Stewart said through the sponsorship, they envision to bring a professional outlook and developing rugby in the country.

Meanwhile, Jaguars coach, Taku Mhonda said since clinching the sponsorship, there has been an influx of players at the club.

He said in the beginning the club had 24 players, but to date the number had ballooned to 42.  Mhonda said the new recruits are from Botho Riders, UB Rhinos and Gaborone Hogs. Jaguars are second on the log.
