Letlhakane Police station commander, superintendent Michael Maphephu said the accident happened on May 21 when a BMW motor vehicle carrying six people aged between 27 and 36 hit a cow, killing three of them, including a nurse.

He revealed that the other passengers suffered multiple fractures and were admitted at Mahalapye hospital.

Two of the survivors are also nurses. “We believe that the victims were travelling from Francistown to Orapa when their car collided with a cow. We do not know what transpired during the accident but we suspect high speed driving which led to the driver losing control, veering across the road and hitting a cow,” he said.

He added: “The car was damaged beyond repair. Its wheels were not connected to the car when we found it, indicating that the driver was indeed driving at a high speed.”

Maphephu advised people to always be careful when driving near cattleposts as there were typically lots of cattle roaming along the roads.

“As police, we are trying by all means to control the movements of the livestock by closing the gates behind them whenever we are on duty. However, it is also up to the drivers to play a role by removing the livestock whenever they see them, in order to save lives,” he said.

Meanwhile, Maphepu said police are also investigating a case in which a 21-year-old man raped his own aunt (24) on May 21 at Setutu cattlepost.

He said it is alleged that the perpetrator spotted his aunt with two of her female friends. He chased them and while the friends managed to escape, his aunt became the victim.

“The accused then tied her with a rope and raped her. When we confronted the accused, he told us his aunt was his girlfriend and that he had not raped her.

“This is absurd because one can never use violence if someone is complying with your actions,” Maphephu said.
