The open discussion forum dubbed, “Can I Take Part?” has been scheduled for this Saturday afternoon at Moving Space, Maru-a-Pula School.

“This initiative addresses issues surrounding the positive impact of women in the arts industry and celebrates those who were active participants in the just ended Maitisong Festival. Through performances, it tackles the societal challenges that cause the low participation of women in industries at large across Botswana,” the open discussion coordinator Kabelo Rapinyana said.

Rapinyana said women play a vital role in the arts industry but with this initiative the aim is to help them excel and get much more involved in different arts avenues such as directing, script writing, producing and administration. During this open discussion there will be performances from artists such as Lesego ‘Leshie Lovesong’ Nchunga and Tumisang Baatshwana who both have a solid experience in the arts industry.

Rapinyana said the performances and discussions will address issues such as “challenges faced by the girl child in Botswana; how this is influenced by society’s beliefs and the laws governing the country”.

He said the open discussion is open to every player in the arts industry who would like to contribute in helping women excel in the arts industry.

“Views from everyone are welcome during the open discussion forum,” he said.

The event will also be graced by a number of professionals from different sectors and industries such as the health, finance, law and academic institutions that will also share a number of issues. Admission is free.
