“The issue is money. We struggle to get friendly matches to prepare the team. In the past, they would get appearance fee from sponsorship money. Effectively there is no money,” Kemoeng said.

The players downed tools for the second time in a less than a week when they refused to take part in training on Monday. They were expected to return to training late yesterday afternoon.

“We dialogued before I left (Francistown on Monday). When I left I was going to consult, and I didn’t know that they had downed tools. I gave them feedback. We have even updated the FUB (Footballers Union Botswana) about the situation. We expect them to go back to training today (yesterday),” Kemoeng said.

Reports are that players had been promised payments for the Lesotho friendly but these were not fulfilled after the game, resulting in the training boycott.

“There is a huge problem, the players won’t train until this is resolved. We agreed that we will be paid for the Lesotho and Malawi matches but after our weekend game, the BFA reneged on its promise. They now say they will only pay for games under the FIFA calendar,” said a player speaking on condition of anonymity.

Meanwhile, Kemoeng absolved players from any wrong doing after they were photographed buying alcohol after the Lesotho match on Saturday.

“Somebody has to show a wrong that was committed, or a rule that was broken. I have not come across a rule which says you cannot go to a hospital or a bar wearing a uniform. We need to be guided,” Kemoeng said.

The Zebras are in camp preparing for a swim or sink encounter against Uganda at the Francistown Sports Complex on June 4.
