However, authorities this time around are prepared to take action against players who go against the practice.  Gaborone United (GU) this week instructed its players not to take part in the festive tournaments whilst promising disciplinary action against those who may default.

“We do not want any of our players to play in festive tournaments because they need to rest,” said a statement from the club.

“Any player who would go against such instructions, there will be action against him. GU supporters are all over and we will be notified if any player takes part in any tournament.”

Jwaneng Galaxy also said it would be an act of indiscipline for players to play the festive tournaments as they have a contractual obligation with the club. “We do not allow players to play in those games. Anyone who would be caught will be brought forward for a disciplinary hearing,” the club’s public relation officer, Tankiso Morake told Mmegi Sport this week.

Orapa United’s mouthpiece, Kabo William said stern measures would be taken against players who may play in the festive games while any harm on the player that occurred during the games will solely be the player’s responsibility.

“Our players are not supposed to take part (play) in the festive tournaments. By doing so disciplinary action will be taken. It is there in our code of conduct that, if injured during that period we are not covering it (medical costs),” he said.

Meanwhile, the BTC Premiership will continue in the second week of January. Molepolole City Stars have a date with log leaders; Security Systems while Orapa United face Prisons. Morupule Wanderers will be home to Miscellaneous while Police XI visit Extension Gunners. The weekend will hosts the classic Gaborone Derby between Township Rollers and Notwane as Gilport Lions host BR Highlanders while GU face Galaxy.
