Botswana and Mozambique enjoy excellent relations underpinned by close historical ties, which were forged during the liberation struggle in Southern Africa.

The relations were also strengthened by the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1975, following the attainment of independence by Mozambique. In 2004, Mozambique established a resident Diplomatic Mission in Gaborone. Botswana reciprocated by establishing a resident Diplomatic Mission in Maputo in 2012.

The State Visit will be preceded by the 5th Session of the Botswana-Mozambique Joint Permanent Commission on Cooperation (JPCC), to be held from May 201-21, 2016. The JPCC will discuss the following issues with the aim of broadening and deepening the scope of bilateral cooperation: trade and investment promotion, defence and security cooperation, energy issues, control of trans-boundary animal diseases, tourism promotion, education, health, shared water courses, transport and cultural cooperation, to mention but a few.

Khama will be accompanied by the Minister for Presidential Affairs and Public Administration, Eric Molale, the Minister of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources, Kitso Mokaila; the Minister of Transport and Communications, Tshenolo Mabeo and other senior government officials.

The President and his delegation are expected back on May 25, 2016.
