Some writing markets for May

And no, they are not going to steal your work — the unfounded fear of many newbie writers. Only seriously dodgy publications and publishers will steal your work, in the end it would put them out of business, so it makes no sense. Writers talk to each other.
So, it's time to look at a few markets to submit to in the next few months. I’ve found a romance publisher, a media group looking for children’s writing, a literary magazine, and two markets for fantasy, and sci-fi stories — something for everyone!
1. Romance novellas and novels
Heroes and Heartbreakers.com welcomes submissions of original romance stories in all subgenres (erotica, contemporary, paranormal/urban fantasy, women’s fiction/chick lit, historical, romantic suspense, etc). They aren’t interested in ‘true confessions’ or other non-fiction material. They want short stories (15,000 - 30,000 words) novellas (30,000 - 50,000 words) and full-length works (up to 60,000). Novellas and full-length romances would most likely be considered for publication as serials. Simultaneous submissions are allowed. They pay $1,000 (or more) against a 25% royalty. Stories should use standard manuscript format (they prefer 12 point, Times New Roman, double-spaced) and be emailed as Word or RTF.

2. Science Fiction and Fantasy Stories
The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction is looking for stories that will appeal to science fiction and fantasy readers. They prefer character-oriented stories and receive a lot of fantasy fiction, but never enough science fiction or humour. Send the entire manuscript. They publish fiction up to 25,000 words in length. 3. Poetry and Literary Short Fiction
The Irish Literary Review is open for submissions until 30th May 2016, they are an online magazine and at the present time are not able to pay contributors. They accept poetry and short fiction. Poems should not exceed 40 lines. You may send up to five poems in any one submission. Flash fiction should be under 500 words. Please send no more than one piece of flash fiction at a time. Fiction should be no shorter than 1,500 words and no longer than 3,000 words.
Please send no more than one story at a time. You may submit in more than one genre at the same time. All submissions must be previously unpublished. Please send all work in one single .doc attachment only. Do not copy and paste work in to the body of your email. 4. Writing for Children
Cricket Media publishes a few different children’s magazines and it might be good to visit their website ( HYPERLINK “http://www.cricketmedia.com/” http://www.cricketmedia.com/) to get acquainted with the kinds of stories they might be looking for. They are looking to publish the finest quality writing and illustration for children of all ages. The magazines welcome submissions from writers of every level of experience. 5. Science Fiction and Fantasy
Clarkesworld Magazine is a Hugo and World Fantasy Award-winning science fiction and fantasy magazine. They are looking for stories of between 1,000-16,000 words. If your story is used, they pay 10¢ per word for the first 5,000 words, 8¢ for each word over 5,000. According to their website: “Science fiction need not be ‘hard’ SF, but rigour is appreciated. Fantasy can be folkloric, contemporary, surreal, etc.
Horror can be supernatural or psychological, so long as it is frightening. There are no barriers as to levels of profanity, gore, or sexuality allowed, but high amounts of profanity, gore, and sexuality are generally used poorly.
