Eyewitnesses said Moiteela beat Moswaane after the two differed over certain campaign procedures during the recently held Phillip Matante East by-election. Moswaane was reportedly rescued by his supporters.

Moswaane and Moiteela’s fight raised eyebrows because the two are well known friends from their days as councillors in Francistown.

“I am a Christian and Christians by nature are forgiving people. Moiteela embarrassed me because I am a Member of Parliament. I am highly regarded in the society but I am seriously considering forgiving him. I will however forgive him when he comes to me directly to apologise.”

He added that he is yet to drop the assault charges he laid against Moiteela at the Kutlwano police station.

Yesterday Moiteela said that he is in the process of apologising to Moswaane.

“I had proposed to meet him some time ago but he suggested to be given time. I will engage him soon so that I can apologise. Even though we fought we have a fairly good relationship,” said Moiteela yesterday.

It is unlikely that the BDP will take any stern action against Moiteela. Yesterday BDP secretary general Botsalo Ntuane said with regards to the incident involving Moswaane and Moiteela: “It’s a matter of personal relations involving two close friends. These things happen,” said Ntuane.

Some members have even cited Moswaane and Moiteela’s fight as one of the factors that led to the party losing the Phillip Matante East by-election.

Days after the Moswaane/Moiteela fight, Vice President Mokgweetsi Masisi conceded that issues of ill-discipline such as fighting could lead to loss of respect towards the BDP by voters.
