The retailer held a give away ceremony on Saturday at Mogoditshane kgotla where 23 raffle winners each walked away with a cow.

Palapye Western Furniture branch Manager, Thabang Mosekiemang told The Monitor the cows were 35 in total and were allocated to winners.

Mosekiemang revealed that they have already awarded 12 cows to winners in the northern part of the country.

He said the win-a-cow raffle has been running from last year November 1 to January 8, 2020 thereafter when the draw was conducted.

Mosekiemang added that the competition started last year where customers won P150,000 worth of furniture. He said in last year’s competition customers won furniture but this year they decided to take the raffle to another level.

“Historically Batswana are farmers, they rear cattle and plough crops. This year we decided to introduce a win-a-cow competition as encouragement for our customers to focus on farming and be self-sufficient,” Mosekiemang said.

“Today 23 people walked away with a cow each and we wish to see them being able to feed themselves with these cows. All of the cows are still young and we are confident that they will benefit the winners, especially that it is something of value to rear and multiply.”

He said years ago Batswana used to sustain themselves with farming, something that has since faded away with time hence the introduction of win-a-cow competition. He stated that each customer had to purchase goods worth from P1,000 in their shops countrywide to qualify for the raffle.

“With goods worth P1,000 a customer qualified for a ticket whilst with P3,000 a customer qualified for three raffle tickets giving them a better chance of winning. We encourage the winners to hold on to their cows even if they are not farmers, rear in order for them to multiply so that they can benefit them in future,” he said.

Keleofe Modisane, who was caught by The Monitor celebrating his 26-year-old son’s triumph, Ditiro Modisane, said even though the raffles that were written under her name did not make it she was happy that one of them emerged victorious.

The Kumakwane native said it was last year December when she visited Western Furniture in Gaborone for shopping and found the competition ongoing.

“I had bought furniture worth more than P8,000 and divided the raffle tickets amongst us, me and my son. I am happy that one of us won, this cow means a lot to us, especially that it’s something of value. I will be taking it to my cattle post to rear it because I am a farmer, I have goats, sheep and cattle,” Modisane said.
