According to one of the organisers, Apollinaira Munyaneza the commemoration would take place at the University of Botswana Library Auditorium from 4pm hours to 6pm. The theme of the event is ‘Let us commemorate the genocide against Tutsi – Fighting against genocide ideology’.

“There is a theme every year. We started commemorating this day in Botswana in 2012,” said Munyaneza, a UB chemistry don. The soft-spoken academic explained that the United Nations (UN) also recognises the commemoration hence the UN resident coordinator based in Botswana would grace the occasion. The keynote speaker is Bonolo Dinokopila, from the UB Law Faculty. Dinokopila would present a paper titled ‘The many faces of genocide denial and the future of Africa’. There would also be a documentary and an address by the Rwandan High Commissioner to Botswana based in Pretoria, South Africa, Vincent Karega. A representative from the Government of Botswana would also address the gathering.

James Nkusi, a Rwandan medical doctor based in Gaborone would perform the vote of thanks. “We encourage the public to attend in large numbers to create awareness of the day.”
