Handful: Police IX have proved a difficult side to beat

Top of the fixture pile this weekend is the game between favourites, Police IX against their disciplined forces’ counterparts, BDF IX, in both the men and women’s sections.

Police IX women are the defending champions and sit second on the log after beating Titans 8-3 in their opener last weekend.

The male Cops sit at the top in their section after a blistering start to the campaign, which saw them thrash Blue Angels 8-0.

The army women are also on cloud nine after beating BMC Rivals 10-2 to move to the top of the log.

The BDF IX men also had a good day in office, after collecting maximum points against BMC, but they sit sixth on the table.

The opening day results bode well for intriguing ties at the National Diamond tonight.

Police IX women coach, Tawina Phibion said he was aware that every team prepares well for them.

“I know that BDF would go all out because we are a target for all teams. So for us, that is a motivation and we do not undermine any opponent that we face.

We intend to come up with solutions to any attack that comes our way,” he said.

Phibion said his players have been training for some time because they knew that at one stage the league would commence and they did not want to be caught unawares.

However, Phibion said his players were a bit rusty last weekend but is looking forward to a competitive game.

Police IX have signed Boingotlo Baithuti from Eagles, but four of their players are on sabbatical leave.

The men’s coach, Godson Motsumi said they were busy with preparations but BDF IX were a tough side with many experienced players and they expect a challenging battle.

“It is a tough assignment, but for you to beat them, you need to work more on offence,” he said. Police IX have signed Eric Simwanza from Wells International.

James Moremedi of BDF IX said they have been training since January.

“We have been working hard both men and women, but without the league it was difficult for us to gauge ourselves. But today we want to bring our top game,” Moremedi said.

He said his plan is to win the game in offence, but not necessarily meaning his defence was poor but that a team can defend only to lose a match due to a minor error.
