The 86-year old woman reportedly fell from the second floor of the female ward building last Saturday and lost her life.

NRH senior public relations officer Shirley Mukamambo confirmed the fatal accident.

“It’s true on Saturday we lost one of our patients who was hospitalised. The fatal accident occurred in the afternoon in which a woman aged 86 fell from the ward through the window and lost her life,” said Mukamambo. She was not in a position to disclose details of the patient, as investigations on the matter are still ongoing.   “We do not know yet what could have caused the accident. On Tuesday this week we visited the deceased’s family members at Tatisiding to inform them about this tragedy,” said Mukamambo, adding that the woman originates from Tumasera village.

The NRH has reported the matter to the police who are currently investigating the cause of the accident.

“This is a sensitive issue. We have lost a life therefore we should deal with it in a deserving manner. We have decided to refrain from this matter to allow the police to carry out investigations,” said Mukamambo.

She added that the management is currently dealing with the matter internally assisted by the hospital staff that was on duty to establish what could have transpired. The police have confirmed the incident and the investigations.

“Is true we are investigating a fatal accident which occurred at NRH last Saturday. We received a report that a woman aged 86 fell down through the ward window and lost her life,” the Central Police station commander Superintendent Lebalang Maniki said.

On Wednesday morning the police were still waiting for post-mortem results to establish the cause of death.

“At the moment we do not know what could have caused the accident but suspect her death might have been caused by injuries she sustained when falling from the second floor ward,” said Maniki. He said that they are yet to interview staff members who were on duty when the accident occurred, to establish what could have transpired that day. “This is a strange fatal accident especially to have occurred at the hospital. It is the first accident in a space of two years,” said Maniki.

Back in 2013, a similar accident occurred when a man aged 35, fell from the hospital ward window and lost his life in what was suspected to be suicide.
