Mentally ill man kills guard for laughing at him

Thabo Tladi appeared before court for the first time yesterday facing a single count of murder in connection with the crime allegedly committed in Phase 2. Prosecutor, Christinah Ramokwena stunned the court with her version of the events of Friday night. She said the accused killed the security guard in cold blood without provocation.

“The accused was driving into the compound and the deceased, in the company of another, were allegedly chatting and laughing at their own affairs. The accused then allegedly felt the two were laughing at him. “The accused alighted from the car, took a knife and stabbed the man to death. This he did without any provocation,” Ramokwena told the court.

The prosecutor further said investigations by the police are still at infancy and argued that Tladi should be remanded in the meantime. She also said the accused had mental issues and had to be remanded in a facility. “He is on medication. He should be remanded at a medical facility urgently. He has to go for a psychiatric evaluation,” Ramokwena advised.

Tladi’s lawyer, Unoda Mack confirmed his client’s mental issues and said the accused had not taken his medication at the time of the incident.  He asked that his client be checked into a medical facility urgently.

Makofi ruled that Tladi be taken to a health facility, but be treated like a murder accused.  The case will continue May 10, 2016.
