UB student elections set for Monday

Again the chief electoral officer had written to SRC that the court has ordered that things should be done procedurally. The other thing was that the urgent court case was finalised late on Sunday,” Kgosiekae said yesterday.

He said the SRC agreed to the postponement because preparations of elections were disturbed by a court case, which was heard on Sunday.

“Again there are some rumours that the chief electoral officer might appeal the outcome of the High Court. There is a possibility that it could be postponed again if indeed we are going to court. But the preparations have started,” he said.

SRC president said the activities for the campaign have stopped because the students are not certain about the dates for the elections.

On Sunday, the Gaborone High Court dismissed a bid to the elections, after the chief electoral officer argued that processes towards the vote were irregular.

Chief electoral officer, Nabadzabo Ngoni, wanted the court to declare that the electoral regulations of the UBSRC elections had not been adopted procedurally and were therefore irregular and unlawful.

He was challenging the electoral regulations 2015/16 of the UBSRC elections which he said had not been repelled by any competent authority and therefore had force of law for purposes of regulating the appointment of the electoral team and regulating the elections for the 2016/17 SRC elections.
