The BNF youth league had collapsed after some of the members who were in the committee defected to join other parties.

The infighting within the old committee, which was already left with a few members, made matters worse when they kept on writing suspension letters to one another and failing to hold committee meetings, The Monitor has learnt.

Those battling it out for the youth league presidency include Owen Nsala and Chukuri Chukuri.

Information gathered by The Monitor suggests that the BNF central committee is the one organising the congress on behalf of the youth in order to restore peace within the party.

“It is true we are organising the congress on behalf of the youth league for the simple reason that we want free and fair elections. Again we want accountability for all the money that would be paid by the delegates because we had learnt from previous elective congresses held in Mahalapye,” BNF international affairs officer responsible for the youth congress, Nelson Ramaotwana, said.

“Remember some would accuse others of misappropriation of funds, amongst other things. We want a peaceful congress and it has to be a professional one. The youth league does not have money and it is divided. Therefore, we cannot give them that responsibility,” he added.

He said those who vote at the congress would be delegates.

Ramaotwana said members of the party’s central committee and other structures would also ensure that at the constituencies, the delegates are chosen at the constituency congress.

He said the party constitution will have to be followed and if some do not follow it then they would be barred from being delegates or from contesting.

“The mother body is not going to interfere in the running of the congress, but it is its duty to ensure that things are done professionally. We are not going to have a problem if the constitution is followed to the letter,” he added.
