Softball to decide fate of league season

The 2019-2020 BoFiNeT League season is already behind schedule, and the situation has been exacerbated by the forced suspension through the coronavirus outbreak.
The association has a mountain to climb because the 2019-2020 season is already behind schedule.
The BSA is still to decide if the season proceeds or is annulled, once the coronavirus subsides. The annual Easter tournament, which is normally hosted by Gatalamotho and Wells International in Jwaneng, has been scrapped off.BSA secretary general, Tsuna Makwa told Mmegi Sport that since the activities have been suspended, the committee was yet to meet and decide when the league would resume. “We have not discussed it yet. We would reschedule when the time is right. All the softball activities are on hold until further notice,” Makwa said.
The BSA is scheduled to hold its annual general meeting (AGM) next month, and a decision has not been taken on its future.
The league season kicked-off late, but it was promising to be an exciting campaign after the sponsor, BoFiNeT increased the winners’ prize money from P100,000 to P110,000.
At the time the league was suspended, Police IX men’s team was in control, unbeaten since the start of the season.
The Cops had accumulated 12 points from their six games while BDF IX was close by with 10 points, and Wells, third on eight.
Police IX coach, Tebogo Makachana said they were worried that the suspension of the league might affect their momentum, but nonetheless their health and safety came first.
“When the league resumes, I foresee teams being forced to play many games in a weekend to catch up, basically it would be the only logical thing to do,” Makachana said. “Otherwise, we might find ourselves having to play into the winter season, which would obviously mean we have a very short off season and possibly interfere with the international calendar.”
Makachana said at the beginning of the season, his assignment was to build a team. He said Police IX was a giant that was on its knees for sometime. “Remember where Police comes from. It was a rebuilding process and it takes times to eventually triumph if you start by rebuilding,” he said.
Makachana said there is a lot they still have to work on as a team to eventually be at the top before they can start thinking that they are the best in the local circles.
“Obviously until we win silverware, we are still one of the underdogs in this competition,” he said.
However, the tactician said he has put together a good squad, which is well balanced in all departments. Makachana said the aim was to compete with and eventually stop the dominance of the powerhouses like Wells and BDF.
“I would not say (we would) run away with the league but it is there for the taking,” Makachana said.
