Mmegi Sport is informed that fraudsters impersonating Gunners’ officials robbed a number of the club’s credulous supporters of their money. The swindlers  pretended to sell policies through the club’s sponsorship with Hollard Life Botswana.

According to Gunners’ chairperson, George Kerekang the said Hollard and Gunners policy sells for a minimum of P100 while maximum sells for P2, 500. “We are aware that somebody is using the club’s name to rob our supporters. We have since written to Hollard alerting them of the situation and seeking clarity. They (Hollard) have since asked us to open an investigation on the matter. We are yet to get at the bottom of this. We are yet to get the exact number of victims, but we have had a number of queries from the club membership,” he said.

Still on the matter, Hollard Life communication officer, Tsaone Otlhogile denied the existence of any agreement with Gunners and has since warned the public to be aware of the fraudsters.

“We are not in any contractual agreement with the team, Gunners or any one to sell our products. Gunners’ officials have contacted us about the issue and we have asked them to find out how many people have been affected. This was last week and to this date we have not received any feedback from the team. We would have liked to finish talks with Gunners and get to the bottom of this, to understand what it is going on here. We will soon release a statement to warn the public that we do not have any contractual agreement with anyone at Gunners to sell our products,” she said.

According to sources, some members of the Gunners’ previous executive committee are implicated in the scam. For instance, Kerekang admitted that there has not been a smooth transitional power at the club after the late last year’s elections. He said the club is being used as a leverage in the scam.

He is also worried about the implications of the matter on the club.

“This will affect us a lot, it paints a bad image of us as the club. We are having serious financial problems and we are in the hunt for a sponsor to come help the team, so when issues like this arise, they would do more harm than good to the club.

The thing is, we did not have a smooth transition of power with the previous committee, if only the previous committee could have handed the power to us smoothly we would have a clue on how this could have happened. We do not know if there are deals or agreements between us and anyone out there,” he said.
