On Tuesday, President Mokgweetsi Masisi announced a 28-day countrywide lockdown, meaning football fans will have to wait much longer to see their teams in action.

The league was two-thirds through the season, with each team left with around 10 games.

The Botswana Premier League (BPL) is reportedly faced with three options to resolve the current situation.

These include, leaving the league to run deep in to what is normally a pre-season period, or to leave use of the current log standings to decide the champions and relegating teams while the last option is to nullify the season. BPL chairperson, Seiphetho Sefhako, however, told Mmegi Sport that the office is not in a rush to decide on the outcome, but was coy on the available options.

“The government has issued a state of emergency so as the league we just have to wait, we do not need to be seen as hasty in our decision-making. We have options that we are looking at; a decision will be taken after the 28 days,” he said.

“Whatever we decide, will be directed by the time and position we would find ourselves in if the government allows or instructs that we may resume our activities, but as of now, there is nothing, our direction solely depends on the government.”

As of Thursday morning, Botswana had recorded four causes of COVID-19 and a single death.

The pandemic is expected to leave financial scars on a number of teams but local clubs have coped thus far. However, the longer the wait goes on, most would struggle to pay players.
