Maele warns Presidential-Housing Appeal beneficiaries

The minister said this during the donation of a house built by Letshego with the help of some members of the Botswana Mine Workers Union (BMWU) at Orapa and Letlhakane mine branches.

The three roomed-house was donated to Moagedi Ramokane Xhanae (20), and his siblings Bofelo Xhanae (17) and Rebabonye Lame Xhanae (15), who are orphans residing at Tawana ward.

Maele indicated that the initiative to help the underprivileged by donating shelter through the response to the presidential housing appeal has been a tremendous and clear testimony to the compassion that the people in the nation have.

“Dignity is an important element in our lives and no one should live an undignified life without shelter.

The importance of shelter cannot be overemphasised against the backdrop that without shelter, someone’s dignity and productivity is affected,” he said.

The minister disclosed that there was an instance where children of a beneficiary in Mmokolodi were fighting over a donated house and wanted to sell it.

He revealed that the plot was given under special dispensation and it became difficult for them to succeed in their mission to sell the house because such plots are only transferred after 15 years.

Maele added that some of the donees in Kgwee settlements leave their donated houses vacant citing that they feel comfortable in their traditional houses.

He noted that they are facing such situations across the country and some of the beneficiaries prefer to create sources of income from renting the place and stay elsewhere.
