Serite was arrested and later charged by the police for using a stolen file from the government, in particular from the Office of the President.

Addressing a political rally over the weekend, Member of Parliament for Selebi-Phikwe West, Dithapelo Keorapetse, said that since President Ian Khama came into office, Botswana has experienced the arrest of several journalists.

He said such arrests include the recent raiding of the  Botswana Gazette offices in Gaborone by police officers, arrest of Sunday Standard Editor Outsa Mokone and many more.

“Journalists are being harassed for doing their work, as the BCP we are against such acts. We totally discourage imprisonment of journalists and we believe it is being unfair to them and not allowing local journalists freedom of speech,” he said. Francistown South MP, Wynter Mmolotsi said the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) was angering and manipulating Batswana in all possible ways.

He said that the BDP government was amused by the arrest of Serite saying it was even visible on their faces that they were very pleased.

“There is no need to question the BDP on their feelings about the arrest of journalists because it is clear on their faces that they are overwhelmed with happiness. As opposition, we need all the corrupt members of Domkrag to also taste the dust, they should seee prison just as they are doing to our journalists,” he said.

On a different matter still at the rally, Mmolotsi suggested that the Minister of Health who is also MP for Sefhare-Ramokgonami constituency, Dorcas Makgatho, should be injected with blood infected with syphilis since she has made fun of the whole thing, saying it was a mistake that some patients at Princess Marina Hospital (PMH) were supplied with such blood.

“Since she is the mother of the ministry, we implore that she also be supplied with the same blood so that she can feel what patients felt. These are some of the mistakes that are very dangerous to the lives of Batswana because we never know, maybe next time patients will be supplied with HIV infected blood or any disease which has no cure. Such mistakes must not happen at all, they must be avoided at all costs,” said Mmolotsi.

He emphasised on the good health of Batswana saying that with the BDP government there was shortage of health facilities, medicines and staff.

He said the government should ensure that Batswana receive good service at hospitals and clinics.
