“I know people are saying why did we leave other teams behind but I can assure you that we will make this event much bigger next year so that we can accommodate more teams,” the tournament’s spokesperson, Monica Alfred said at a media briefing yesterday.

The tournament features other local sides; Kutlwano, Spiking Stars, Diphatsa, Police, Prisons and Dynamites. The men’s teams will be divided into two pools of four teams in each pool.

The top two teams in each pool will progress to the semi finals. The women’s teams will play in a round robin format with the team that accumulates more points winning the trophy and gold medals.

Alfred said following their participation at the Zone VI tournament last year, they decided that they needed to keep the momentum and play more games against international sides.

“In January this year we sat down and decided that we organise an international tournament. We short-listed some of the teams and sent invites.

Some of the teams could not make it this year mainly because of short notice of invitation as well as issues surrounding finance,” she said. Besides Raidors, the organisers had also invited another Zimbabwean side, Spartans as well as Lesotho’s Red Skins. Fidelity Print Mark company has pledged sponsorship worth around P30, 000. The company has bought 30 gold medals and 30 silver medals as well as three trophies. They will also be responsible for 12 individual awards for outstanding players. O3 will provide water worth around P1, 900 for participating teams. The tournament is expected to prepare the local sides for the coming season.
