Council urges Masisi to restrain PSP, Tsogwane

The councillors, led by chairperson Mpho Morolong and his vice, Stephen Makhura, told Masisi on Wednesday that Morupisi clandestinely cancelled their deal with First National Bank Botswana (FNBB).
Morupisi recently cancelled a deal of over P12 million, between council and FNBB to procure 30 vehicles to improve service delivery.
When the PSP saw the unveiling of the vehicles on TV and newspapers he called the council secretary, Nelson Mogapi and tongue-lashed him over the decision, expressing disgust at the initiative.
Morupisi was of the view that the council did not engage the parent Ministry on the deal.
Morupisi said the council acted irresponsibly and recklessly by forcing the government into unnecessary debts, adding that it was a very expensive initiative, more particularly because it is not a revenue-generating project.
The councillors told Masisi that the manner in which Morupisi handled and cancelled the matter was disrespectful and arrogant.
They said the PSP has got issues he is not stating and they believe that he wants to micro-manage councils, after they were given powers to run their own affairs and come up with initiatives to improve service delivery.
“Our council is in dire need of vehicles and this often paralyses our council to render services. We believe our deal with FNB was a well-thought out plan to improve our service delivery. We believe we did all that was necessary including engaging our ministry but the PSP expressed disgust with our project,” Makhura told Masisi.
Masisi advised the irate councillors not to raise the issue anymore on the floor, as it is a matter that needs to be discussed behind closed doors.
“Please let’s agree to discuss it indoors so that I get the facts clearly before I act,” he advised.
On another issue, the council leadership said Tsogwane recently visited their council to address staff but never bothered to pass by the chairperson’s office to pay a courtesy call as prescribed in protocol and etiquette practices.Masisi promised to pass their displeasure to Tsogwane.
