Majaga was arraigned on charges of defilement before Nata Magistrate’s Court on Monday. In a statement released this morning the ruling party stated that Majaga has been suspended for 60-days to enable him to clear his name in the wake of the charges levelled against him.

“As a party that respects and upholds the rule of law, the BDP will allow Majaga to deal with the charges without prejudice and allow for completion of the process of the law,” reads the statement from the party.

On Monday, just after his arraignment, the BDP issued a release sternly condemning allegations levelled against Majaga. The BDP statement came after it was disclosed earlier on that Majaga has allegedly impregnated a minor at Malelejwe, a settlement in the legislator’s constituency.

Majaga has since denied the defilement allegation saying that the case is a witch-hunt by those who deeply loathe him in the BDP and has vowed to do everything possible to clear his name of the ‘trumped-up’ criminal charge.

The general consensus among many, especially rights groups and opposition parties, has been that Majaga should be suspended from the party to allow him to clear his name.
