Mahalapye Seeks Divine Intervention Over Increased Road Accidents

The worrying figures were disclosed recently by Mahalapye Police traffic officer, assistant superintendent, Kgosienalerona Sechoni during a mass prayer held recently at Gwape Lands, 10 kilometres north of Mahalapye.

Sechoni said out of 103 accidents that happened last year in their policing area, 51 accidents involved youth.

Although he did not give related figures he said that youth also led in fatalities out of the 103 accidents.

Sechoni said a majority of the accidents involving the youth were due to alcohol and drug abuse as well as reckless driving.

In addition, he said Gwape was chosen to hold the prayers because it is one area, which is prone to accidents.

“Last year we registered five fatal accidents around Gwape Lands on the A1 road and nine lives were lost in the process,” he said.

Father Kenneth Mokgothu encouraged motorists to seek guidance as well as protection of God while on the road and refrain from acting without caution when driving.

“It is the responsibility of both drivers, pedestrians and livestock owners to ensure that there are no road accidents.  All parties must embrace road safety in order to significantly reduce road accidents,” Mokgothu said.

Other prayer points were general accidents involving those at home, murder and electricity faults, alcohol and drusg abuse by members of the public and youth.  Also they prayed on general crime, youth drivers’ attitudes on roads, accidents involving locomotives, child abuse, family and rain.

Department of Road Traffic and Safety Mahalapye station manager, Pearl Kaseka expressed concern that some accidents happen because of poor servicing of vehicles.  She urged motorists to always ensure that their cars are fully serviced.
