Obscure HAB raises its hand

He said the coaching clinics would be undertaken in various parts of the country with the assistance of Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC).

HAB was established in 2011, but was recognised by the BNSC and Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC) in 2013.  He said at the moment they have established a centre in Maun. “Handball is an All Africa Games and Olympic sport. We have started working with Botswana Defence Force (BDF) to build teams that would represent the army at the International Military Sports Council (CISM) games,” he said.

He said partnering with BDF would assist in the development of the sport. Onyewadume said HAB has two International Handball Federation (IHF) accredited coaches, Harvinder Dhaliwal and Buyani Mphetsolang.  He said their presence would benefit the development of the sport.

“We sent a team to participate in the IHF trophy that was held in Zambia in 2014. We have also secured a handball court at a cost of P500,000 from IHF. The court was installed at the University of Botswana,” he said. Onyewadume said there is no handball league in Botswana at the moment.

He said they only have clubs and school tournaments, which are held at the UB court. He said they are in the process of licensing clubs and players in line with IHF statutes.  He said in order to have a proper league they would need to have sponsorship. Meanwhile, Onyewadume said the association is still new and that they are hampered by shortage of financial resources to drive development activities. He said they hope the BNSC would continue giving the association support.

“We hope they support us the way parents support their toddlers until they are independent,” he said.
