Jonathan is the proud owner of a flourishing cake baking and decorating business, ‘Sweet Lick’, a venture she established from her own savings 10 months ago. Her parents assisted her with more funds to grow her business.

Born and raised in Francistown, the confident Jonathan told Monitor Business that from a tender age she has always harboured intentions of running her own business. The business, which is located in Kgaphamadi next to Choppies, opened its doors last May.

“I developed more passion in the business while helping my mother in her business.

“She owns an events management company. While helping my mother I realised that there is a niche in the cake baking and decorating industry which is why I decided to open the business,” Jonathan said with a smile.

Sweet Lick produces cakes for baby showers, parties and weddings, among others. She however says that the cake baking and decorating industry has seen tremendous growth in recent months, which has resulted in stiff competition.

“To beat competition I do much research on how I can improve my products. I also put more emphasis on excellent customer services in order to retain customers. Some customers also recommend me to their colleagues on account of good the service I gave them,” she said.

Jonathan, who holds a certificate in baking, says she is happy with her business at the moment. “My business has been well received. Many people have greatly endorsed my products,” she said proudly.

Jonathan said her future plan is to expand her business and supply major chain stores around the country.

“I also want to grow my business into a venture that can employ many people,” she added. As a parting shot the 22-year old encouraged the youth who want to venture into business to come up with unique business ideas and be patient as they try to set up their ventures.

“ If you do not come up with a unique business idea, chances of your business surviving are very minimal,” she said.
