Butler is a former Southend player and said he is keeping tabs on the youngster, whose contract was recently renewed.

“I am in touch with him. He just got an extension to his deal, he is on my radar. We will not involve him at the moment. It is better he develops in that environment and then can look at him as he progresses.

The general impression is that he has a bright future and he can’t afford to take his foot off the pedal. He must keep working at his game,” Butler said.

Batlokwa said he is keen to represent Botswana.

“I feel like I am improving everyday and my hard work has paid off as I have been offered an extension on my contract at Southend. I want this momentum to continue.

The idea of representing my country is music to my ears and whether I get the call is up to Mr Butler. I have a decent relationship with him and he has urged me to keep working hard,” he said.

Asked what he would bring to the Zebras if gets a call-up in future, Batlokwa cited his flair.

“I am a player who likes to excite the fans by creating and scoring goals. Attacking is probably the best part of my game so I would hope that I add attacking qualities to the team,” Batlokwa told Mmegi Sport from the UK.

He said he might consider offers if a good options comes his way, although he emphasized he is happy at Southend.

“I am enjoying my time at Southend at the moment but you never know what might happen in the future. If a good offer did come through I would be happy to explore my options,” the 18 year-old said.

Batlokwa left Botswana at the age of 10 and settled in London where he joined Essex Thurrock. He had trials at Arsenal while playing for the Under-13 squad. He is described as a skillful midfielder who creates loads of chances for strikers. Batlokwa is a product of Re Ba Bona Ha, a Botswana National Sport Council (BNSC) development programme.
