Due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Botswana Motor Sport (BMS) postponed the season opener that was scheduled for March after the government suspended all sporting activities.

But now, engines will roar into life on June 27 as the BMS holds an off-road event, dubbed Boteti 200, in Orapa.  “We wish to inform all Botswana motorsport clubs that the 2020 calendar will resume on June 27, with Orapa Motorsport Club hosting the season opener of the national off road championship,” a statement from the BMS reads.

Since the suspension of activities, the association has missed out five events, including the Motocross of African Nations (MxoAN) that was to be held in Uganda while the popular 1000 Toyota Desert Race was cancelled. Speaking to Mmegi Sport this week, BMS vice president, Roseline Mamaloukos said despite the season being heavily affected, the association was working to reschedule the calendar.

She ruled out the possibility of a change in the remaining season’s calendar. To have a national championship, the BMS needs seven rounds for each of the off-road and motorsport championships.

“Our calendar usually runs from March to November, during this period we need to have seven rounds to have the national off-road championship and seven rounds for the motocross championship. We have thus far missed four races; two off-road championships and two motocross events,” Mamaloukos said.

“We are busy evaluating our calendar; I think we will be done by this Friday (today). We are still discussing on how to squeeze the events in before December because we are not thinking about changing the calendar. We are aware of the impact on the riders and clubs, but we will share more details because the final decision will be taken on Friday.”
