GU sucked into Nato saga

Sources said GU had been reluctant to sign Nato “as they were aware of transfer complications outside the January window”.

It is said when the player moved to Rollers, GU felt aggrieved.

There are reports that some GU officials called the player after a protest was lodged with the Botswana Premier League (BPL) and told him that the club had been reluctant to sign him due to transfer restrictions.

“They told him they could not sign him as they were aware of the regulations,” said the source.

GU reportedly told Nato they could not sign him since the team was not chasing any silverware this season after falling behind in the league race and being knocked out of the Mascom Top 8.

However, GU have vehemently denied being behind the current protests regarding his move to Rollers. The club chairperson, Rapula Okaile said they have nothing to do with the protests.

“What would be our interest in the matter really? Those allegations are not true,” he said yesterday.

Okaile also said the reason they did not sign Nato was because Nato probably chose a better offer. He said they competed like any other club for his signature, but the player took an economic decision.

The Zebras’ vice captain has been at the centre of two protests lodged by both Mochudi Centre Chiefs and Gilport Lions who argue his transfer was not procedural. Chiefs protested after Nato helped Rollers to a 3-1 win in the first leg of the Mascom Top 8 semi final. He also played against Lions for a few minutes in the 3-0 win in the league. The BPL disciplinary committee (DC) was scheduled to make a ruling yesterday evening regarding Chiefs’ protest. They were also scheduled to preside over Gilport Lions’ protest.
