Notwane wins Tennis Tour Gaborone

The Tennis Tour Gaborone tournament drew clubs from around the country including international outfit, The Lab Tennis Club from South Africa.

The social tournament was meant to build momentum in the development of local tennis. The teams included; Propellers, Gaborone Club, Tennis Lab, Magenga, Gaborone Club, Selebi-Phikwe Tennis Club, Yop and the hosts Notwane Club. The matches played were shortened to six minutes per game, and played in singles and doubles.

The main attraction was the men’s singles final, which featured prominent Notwane players; Thabiso Mabaka and Shingirai Muzondiwa, both former Davies Cup players. The tactical match saw Muzondiwa prevail 8-6.

Muzondiwa, who is also the Notwane Club chairperson, said his side took advantage of home ground to maintain a solid run on their opponents.

“We look forward to having this tournament after every quarter of the year, and also taking it to other places around the country,” he said.

Youthful outfit, Yop, came second after a solid performance with Selebi-Phikwe Tennis Club finishing third.

Meanwhile, Botswana Tennis Association (BTA) will send two players to South Africa for the African Junior Championship (AJC). The tournament is scheduled to run from March 8 to March 16. BTA official, Gaone Poane will officiate at the tournament.
