SA players to feature in tennis tourney

The Tennis Tour Gaborone is an open day for the public to come and learn more about the sport with a club competition set to take place later in the day.

“We have South African tennis players from Tennis Lab joining us for the tournament as they will form teams that will take on local sides in a club competition. Prior to that, the local clubs and South African players will preach the word of tennis to the public and demonstrating how it is played,” said Shingi Muzondiwa, a Notwane Tennis Club official.

He said highly-ranked South African wheel chair tennis player, Kagiso Montjane is expected in Gaborone to work closely with disabled players. “Montjane’s presence will be a boost to disabled tennis players’ confidence,” he said. In 2011, Montjane was ranked number five in the world.

Muzondiwa said the event is divided into two sections with a tennis workshop in the morning and a club competition in the afternoon. The number of participating clubs has not been confirmed as registration is ongoing. Thus far Notwane, Gaborone, Francistown, Selebi-Phikwe and University of Botswana clubs have registered. The competition will have singles and doubles matches. “The club that wins most matches will be crowned the winner of the tournament,” stated Muzondiwa.

Members of the public that are interested in taking part in the club competition have been advised to register.
