Man injures sons, hangs himself

Although the police said they cannot link the two incidents, rumours are rife that their father attacked the boys after he had a misunderstanding with their mother. He is said to have used a hammer to injure the boys.

Palapye police station commander, superintendent Waboraro Ramaja, said they received a report on Sunday night that two boys aged nine and 11 were spotted with severe head injuries. He said on their arrival at the scene, they found the boys in critical condition and took them to Palapye Primary Hospital where they were later transferred to Nyangagwe Referral Hospital.

“By the time we arrived at the scene, the boys were alone in the house without their father, whom we have been informed stayed with them,” he said. Ramaja added that between 7.30am and 8am on Monday, they received another report that a man was found hanging from a tree near the Palapye Sub Land Board offices.

“We rushed there and upon arrival found the 49-year-old man hanging from a tree. The man used a wire to hang himself. We then took him to the hospital where he was certified dead by the medical doctor,” said the police boss.

He said they are not yet certain about what might have caused the man to commit suicide as he did not leave any note. However, he said after examining the area, they do not suspect any foul play.

Ramaja said they could not  link the deceased with the young boys’ attack as they had not yet taken statements from the boys. He said the boys’ mother is also clueless as she was said to be at her house at Boikago ward when everything happened. Police investigations are still ongoing.  The boys are currently at Nyangagwe in stable condition.

The deceased was unemployed and originated from Palapye. In a different matter, a 24-year-old man died after drowning in a flowing river at Maape village in the Tswapong area in the wee hours of Tuesday. According to the police, the deceased was returning from a drinking spot when the rain caught him.

“It seems like the rain started while the deceased was still on the other side of the village and for him to get back home he had to cross the river. So from what we were told, it rained until late and the deceased lost patience. At around 2am he tried to cross the flowing river and drowned,” explained Ramaja. He said the deceased was taken by the police to Palapye Primary Hospital where he was unfortunately certified dead.

Meanwhile, the station commander encouraged the public to always have patience when it comes to issues of water. He said people must never undermine the flowing rivers as no one can determine the depth of the river when it is flowing.
