Giving his report during Saturday’s annual general meeting, Jones said the land issue was irrelevant as the union does not have title deed.

He said the union did not have funds to develop the plot. He said BRU was supposed to apply for the title deed from the Gaborone City Council but they failed. He said that means they cannot develop the plot.

Mmegi Sport is in possession of a letter dated August 11, 2015 from the BNSC addressed to the BRU president informing the rugby body that it had been allocated a piece of land being plot 73271 in Gaborone. The plot has been zoned for sports and recreation and measures 4.6 hectares.

Jones said the letter from BNSC was confirming ownership of the land and does not alter their situation. He said the letter came late and there was nothing he could do as his tenure was almost over. One of the delegates, Keneilwe Modise, inquired from Jones if BRU does not have land or not. She said normally there is a time limit given when a plot is allocated even when there is no title deed.

But Jones dismissed the inquiry saying there was no need to discuss the matter.

New president, Dave Gilbert said he has appointed a committee to look into the matter soon after his election on Saturday.

Meanwhile, BRU treasurer, Vincent Mashaya said the union was forced to cancel most of their activities due to lack of funds.

He advised the affiliates to work hard in assisting the union. Mashaya said BRU got itself into debt when it hosted the Six Nations in 2013 without a sponsor. He said the union had to part with P400,000 that is half of the grant they get from BNSC. He said this negatively affected their operations.
