The ward, which has been a stronghold of the BNF for the past 22 years, fell vacant in December last year when councillor Makalare Ngomme died after serving for six years.

Lebotso, a three-time runner in previous BDP primaries, was chosen as a compromise candidate and will battle for the council seat against Robert Rancho of the Umbrella for Democratic Change in the March 5 by-election.

At Lebotso’s launch, Health Minister, Dorcas Makgato, who is also Sefhare-Ramokgonami MP, implored Sekoma residents to vote for the ruling party, saying this would give it more more power to bring developments to their ward.

“The government depends on consensus and sitting together around the table to discuss developments and this is not easy to do with opposition parties,” she said.

Mahalapye East legislator and Assistant Local Government and Rural Development minister, Botlogile Tshireletso, said Lebotso had been loyal to the party and was a leader of repute who could be trusted.

For his part, Lebotso vowed to work tirelessly to bring developments to the area, should residents send him to council on March 5.

“This ward has been abandoned by the opposition for the past 22 years,” he said. “I will advocate for my electorate to partake in government programmes that are aimed at improving the livehoods of Batswana.”
