UDC mourns Boutros-Ghali

He took office in 1992 and served a single term of five years at a very difficult time in the evolution of the world body.  He came to the helm of the UN at a time of increasing influence for the world body following its decisive role in the Gulf War.

His attempt to go for a second term was vetoed by the US. Resolute and free-minded, Boutros-Ghali took to the helm determined to pursue peace after the fall of the Berlin wall and the easing of East-West tensions that had long stymied the United Nations.

He also resolved to attack the overstuffed bureaucracy and enduring money problems of the organisation.

Boutros-Ghali died in Cairo, Egypt at the age of 93.
