“The policy is not binding unlike when it is a law. Again we want a commission to be set up to look into all youth programmes, on how they can develop the youth.

The commission will help us on whether these programmes are beneficial to the youth or not? Some youth have ideas on how small youth businesses could be turned into bigger companies,” said BDP National Youth Executive Committee chairperson Andy Boatile. He said they had realised that some youth businesses have the capability of growing but the owners need support from the government and Batswana. Boatile said the commission would analyse each programme and make recommendations.

On other issues, the BDP youth resolved that the party should consider charging half price for the youth who wish to contest elections. In 2013 any person who contested the Bulela Ditswe elections paid P2,500 for a council seat while an MP aspirant parted with P5,000.

“It should be known that the youth do not have money and at times it becomes difficult for them to be contenders because of lack of funds. Campaigns are also expensive just within the party.  This will encourage the youth to contest for elections during the primaries. Our committee wants to see many youth becoming councillors and MPs,” he said.

The council also resolved that the issue concerning the presidential election should be left to the party national congress for debate.
