The BAA instituted independent investigations into the incident, but president Paphane Botlhale said the contents would not be made public yet. Botlhale added he does not want to pre-empt the contents of the report.

“The association would be guided by the recommendations from the report on the way forward. We wanted to get deeper into the issues hence we instituted an independent investigation,” he said.

Botlhale said BAA Board instituted the investigation and, therefore, it was purely a BAA report.

He declined to disclose when the findings would be made public, arguing it was still early to commit. Botlhale said his committee would be guided by the report’s recommendations.

The BAA board met over the weekend and the members received a copy of the report from a committee tasked with investigation circumstances around the accident.

The two athletes allegedly sneaked out of camp and were later involved in an accident, which left Nkobolo needing surgery.

Nkobolo was initially hospitalised at Gaborone Private Hospital before he was later transferred to Princess Marina Referral Hospital to undergo physiotherapy. He has since been discharged from hospital and is recuperating at home.

Nkobolo’s compatriot escaped with minor injuries. Thebe, who was the driver, was later slapped with a reckless driving charge.

The national team was in camp preparing for the Tokyo Olympic Games qualifiers.

Thebe and Nkobolo are influential members of the country’s 4x400m relay. They were part of the relay team that won Botswana a gold medal (4x400m) at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
