The Elections Board chairperson, Moemedi Letina recently told Mmegi Sport that the process had been “more difficult than first thought”.
Only last week the committee asked candidates to submit further information, which would assist in the vetting process.
Nominations closed on June 19, and four weeks later, the vetting process has not been concluded.
According to the BFA Electoral Code, candidates were supposed to go through the vetting process and received the outcome within 10 days.
There should be adequate time for appeals for aggrieved candidates, but with the assembly fast approaching, time is limited.
BFA president, Maclean Letshwiti said they were still proceeding with the August 8 date in mind.
He said the Electoral Body has communicated nothing regarding shifting dates.
“We are moving as per the agenda, everything depends on the vetting process. The Elections Board will tell us, but so far, there has been nothing, and in the absence of anything, we proceed with the given date,” Letshwiti said.
There are three camps contesting the election, with Letshwiti facing his predecessor, Tebogo Sebego and Ookeditse Malesu in the fight for the presidency.
Reports are gloves are off, as candidates attempt to unearth each other’s dirt, in order to force the hand of the Elections Board.
“We could see some people vetted out. The campaign is getting dirty. All eyes would be on the Elections Board to see who is vetted out, but for sure, some people will be axed,” a source close to the developments said.
