Two days back, the South Sudan President, Salvar Kiir moved to reinstate his rival Machar as the country’s vice president to pave way for peace in the troubled country.

“I, Salva Kiir Mayardit, President of the Republic of South Sudan, do hereby issue this Republican Decree for the appointment of Dr Riek Machar Teny as the first vice President of the Republic of South Sudan,” Kiir said. The appointment was part of an August 2015 peace deal preceded by numerous others that were repeatedly broken.

Yesterday, Mogae’s JMEC welcomed the move, commending the government for taking the step. “It is necessary for the formation of the Transitional Government of National Unity,” the committee said.

“Despite these developments it appears mistrust continues to fester.” There are still challenges as Machar has not yet relocated to the capital Juba saying that he will only go there once the government has facilitated his security to move with him. Mogae’s deputy, Francois Lounceny Fall, the former Prime Minister of Guinea, urged all parties to hasten planning for the phased and sequenced implementation of transitional security arrangements for Juba, in order to accelerate the relocation of forces from the capital and begin the movement of Machar’s guard.

The deputy chairperson urged the parties to intensify their efforts to form a complete Transitional Government of National Unity (TGoNU) as soon as possible.

Machar, has since accepted the reappointment terming it ‘a move in the right direction’ in an interview with BBC recently.
