Maun Unpacks Its P140M Stimulus Package

The district faces acute poverty and has been given the largest chunk of the ESP programme, which is a government initiative to boost the economy.

Matseka said everything was in order for the implementation of the ESP. She said she hoped that ESP investment in education would reduce poverty.

“ESP projects in schools will lead to better education and better lives,” she said.

Government has allocated P140 million for ESP projects in the North West District. The district commissioner said investment in the education sector in the district could improve the standard of education. She described the P140 million allocation for ESP as the biggest in the country. The money would be spent on projects that were planned for the 2016-2019 period.

The ESP money would be used to deal with classroom backlog in eight primary schools and to build seven laboratories, 50 classrooms and 51 staff houses in 12 junior secondary schools. Construction work will offer 2 031 temporary jobs.

Other ESP projects in the North West District during the 2015/16 financial year include kgotla offices at Khwai, Samochima and Etsha 1, and these were expected to create 130 jobs.

Matseka said land servicing would be undertaken though ESP at Matlapana and Gumare while 12 houses per constituency would be built at Maun West, Maun East, Ngami and Okavango under the Self Help Housing Agency.

Part of the P140 million ESP money would go towards updating the records system for Tawana Land Board.
