SPEDU avails land for entrepreneurs

The plots, which were owned by the Selebi- Phikwe Town Council (SPTC), were last August handed over to SPEDU to spur the economic diversification of the region. SPEDU CEO, Mokubung Mokubung said they have 74 light industrial plots that are currently advertised for buying by local entrepreneurs that will be allocated in April 2016.

Mokubung said all sectors of the economy including mechanics, welding, transport services and agriculture are eligible to apply for the plots as they are not limited to any business sector.

He said Batswana and companies that are majority owned by citizens can apply and own the plots.  “All Batswana eager to establish a business in that area qualify to own that plot,” he said. He added that preference will be given to applicants who are ready to develop and utilise the plots immediately.

Mokubung said the price of each plot is P80 per square metre and that entrepreneurs will only be allowed to buy a plot between 1,000-1,700 square metres.

 He said the prices are affordable thus give room for small businesses to be able to participate.

Mokubung said the light industrial plots will be a great investment in Selebi-Phikwe because it will be a good opportunity for businesspeople and companies to grow their businesses and also assist and grow the economy of the SPEDU region.

Mokubung said they do not want buyers who are going to keep the plots unused or sell them at a higher price to profit out of them.

He said if those plots were to be used accordingly, SPEDU will be in a better position to assess the purchasing power of Selebi-Phikwe before establishing shopping complexes.

“We will be able to assess the buying power of people in Selebi-Phikwe through the demand that will be reached from those industrial sites before we can establish a shopping mall,” he said.

Mokubung said he hopes the industrial plots will improve the livelihood of people in the SPEDU region, since he is assured that more employment will be created.
