BFA dumps Sexwale

BFA had taken a decision to support the South African anti-apartheid hero and businessman, but he has thus far been underwhelming.

The BFA president, Tebogo Sebego told Mmegi Sport yesterday that they will only make a call after the candidates make their presentations at the congress just before the election.

“I think his campaign has been lukewarm. We had interest in him as a business and football person.

We expected an in-depth engagement from him as a region, but I would not say I am disappointed because I do not know the extent of his challenges,” Sebego said.

FIFA holds presidential election during an extra ordinary congress on February 26 to replace strongman, Sepp Blatter, whose reign folded disappointingly amid swelling corruption allegations.

He was slapped with an eight-year ban from football activities. Sebego will cast the local association’s vote.

With Sexwale, who has been criticised in his homeland for running a lacklustre campaign, out of reckoning, the BFA faces a tough choice to pick between Asia’s Salman Bin Ibrahim Al-Khalifa, and FIFA vice president, Prince Ali Al Hussein who stood and lost to Blatter in the previous election. The two are seen as frontrunners heading to Zurich for the crucial vote.

Voting is seen proceeding to the second round with Hussein and Al-Khalifa neck-to-neck in the build-up.

CAF has decided against supporting its own, instead throwing its weight behind Al-Khalifa.
