Chiefs on the other hand were to play against Ferroviário Maputo of Mozambique. Both clubs have cited financial problems as the reason for withdrawing from the competition. Chiefs were the first to announce their decision to pull out last month and the hope remained on GU as Botswana’s representatives in the continental club competition.

However, they took a decision to withdraw yesterday.

“We are dealing with the matter as we speak now where we are to make a decision regarding our participation,” club chairperson, Rapula Okaile told Mmegi Sport earlier yesterday. The club later announced through their Facebook page that they had pulled out of the competition. “Due to our inability to mobilise resources and lack of financial support we have no option but to announce our withdrawal from the CAF confederations cup 2016.

We are of the view that Gaborone United is committed to participating in these kinds of competitions as it gives the players and the technical team a very good exposure and experience. Our position on this matter and the late response is highly regretted,” the statement read.

South African Premiership side, Ajax Cape Town also announced their withdrawal from the competition this past week citing security concerns over their trip to Angola as their reason.
