Initially BOFEPUSU had submitted 74,811 as their membership, made up of 30, 812 from Manual Workers, 18,628 from Botswana Teachers Union BTU), 15,189 from BOSETU, and 10,182 from BLLAHWU, to determine if they still meet the required threshold following the exit of BOPEU from the BOFEPUSU in December last year. According to official documents in The Monitor’s possession, 21,148 members were rejected after they were found to belong to two or more trade unions. Of the 21,148, both BOSETU and BTU accounted for 17,728 or 83% of the dual memberships, with BTU dual membership standing at 8, 966, and BOSETU at 8, 762. BLLAHWU and Manual Workers Union’s dual membership was found to be 2, 102 and 1,318 respectively.
Meanwhile, a further 265 was shaved off the initial grand total submitted by BOFEPUSU, because the names were rejected as unauthentic.
Of this, 145 were duplicate membership, 21 were names without Omang, 77 were employees sharing Omang numbers, and 22 were employees with problematic Omang, according to the report by the PSBC.
In their comments, the PSBC noted that there is an emerging trend of multiple membership in addition to dual membership.
The report says the verification process revealed that 652 members belonged to three or more trade unions.
After the verification process , Manual Workers dropped from 30,812 to 29,471, while BTU dropped from 18,628 to 9,662, with BOSETU dropping from 15,189 to 6,426. BLLAHWU dropped from their initial 10,182 membership to 7,839.
