The department says temperatures are expected to go up to 41 degrees celsius in the Kgalagadi beginning Thursday going into the weekend. In an interview, the Principal Meteorologist, Radithupa Radithupa, said the heat wave in South Africa would affect most areas in Kgalagadi.

Radithupa said: “We have detected uncomfortable rise in temperatures in those areas in the coming days going into the weekend. Remember, Kgalagadi is also known for its high temperatures.

“Tomorrow the temperatures would start hitting 39 degrees Celsius in all the places at Kgalagadi area. Places such as Tsabong are expected to record 41 degrees by Monday.”

He said temperatures would drop on Tuesday, with a likelihood of showers in the areas that experienced the heat wave.

The rains had been detected to affect most areas in Kgalagadi and in the northern parts of the country.

Showers are also expected Francistown, Mahalapye and Palapye.

Radithupa said his department felt ringing an alarm on the forecasted heat wave might become an over elaboration.

“Although there is a likelihood of a heat wave, we felt we should not ring an alarm because we also expect showers over those areas which may change the temperatures,” he said. “Besides, Kgalagadi remains clear and stable.”

Last month, a heat wave, with temperatures reaching 43 degree Celsius, enveloped Botswana for a number of days.
