The Serowe congress, held in the build-up to the 2014 general elections, had resolved that the UDC executive swiftly set-up a task force on corruption to alert on issues of corruption, its depth, extent and implications while also advising on responses that can be made by the party leadership.

Yesterday, UDC spokesperson Moeti Mohwasa revealed that the party was yet to establish the task force.  “The ‘corruption alert’ task force is among organs we are seriously considering setting up. We are a party that is strongly against corruption and that is why it is vital to have a task force.

“However, we have been busy with other pressing party activities since the 2014 general elections which is why we have not established the force,” Mohwasa told Mmegi yesterday. But he could not say when the task force would be established.

“I however, believe that the task force will be in full force within a reasonable time,” Mohwasa said.

At its Serowe conference, the UDC also accepted and ratified the UDC Youth League, which has also appeared dormant since the Serowe conference. Phenyo Segokgo was elected the UDCYL interim leader.

Yesterday, Segokgo conceded that the youth wing has largely been quiet.

“We have not performed as we would have wished. We only contributed significantly during campaigns and mobilising activities for the general elections, but since then we have not been very active,” he said.

He added: “You will remember that after the general elections the Botswana People’s Party youth had their own elective conference and the Botswana Movement for Democracy youth also had our own”.

“This meant that the UDC youth league did not fully function. The Botswana National Front Youth League (BNFYL) will have its own elective congress and after that it’s anticipated that there will be more activity from the UDCYL.”

Segokgo said the youth from all the three fraternal parties making up the UDC will have a meeting in September, an event that he says will reignite the UDC youth league’s vitality.
